Special Grade Curses
Ancient nightmares birthed from humanity's darkest impulses, now seeking to erase their creators forever.
Special Grade Curses are not merely monsters; they are living calamities. Standing beyond standard classification, their mere presence threatens to level entire cities. Unlike mindless spirits born from fleeting human negativity, these entities possess razor-sharp intelligence and cursed techniques capable of warping reality itself. They serve as the primary antagonists in the series' most devastating conflicts, often demanding the combined might of multiple Special Grade Sorcerers just to stand a chance.

Lore & Background
In the hierarchy of cursed spirits, Special Grade entities occupy a lonely summit. While standard curses are reactive echoes of emotion, these rare anomalies have evolved into sentient beings with distinct philosophies. Mahito treats humans as raw material for grotesque evolution; Jogo and Hanami harbor a primal rage against modern civilization's pollution. Their power transcends simple energy output, manifesting techniques that defy physics—manipulating souls, igniting magma, or bending space to their will.
In Their Own Story
The sky over Shibuya choked on ash and ozone as Jogo perched atop a fractured skyscraper, his grin baring rows of jagged teeth. Below, the city screamed while fire erupted from the pavement, consuming everything in its path. He required no army; he was the calamity itself. 'Humans,' he mused, watching sorcerers struggle against the inferno, 'are nothing but trash that needs to be swept away.' With a casual flick of his wrist, pillars of magma defied gravity, ready to turn the skyline into a graveyard.
Reader's Guide
Designated for their capacity to destroy cities or cause mass casualties single-handedly, Special Grade Curses are the most lethal non-human entities in existence. Unlike standard curses that dissipate upon exorcism, these beings possess self-awareness and often a philosophical drive toward human extinction. Motivations vary—from reclaiming the world for nature (Hanami) to accelerating evolution (Mahito)—but their goal remains consistent: the end of humanity. They are frequently manipulated by ancient sorcerers like Kenjaku into conflicts such as the Shibuya Incident, though Kenjaku himself is a Special Grade Sorcerer, not a curse. The confirmed roster includes Mahito, Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon, alongside the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna. Defeating any one requires coordinated efforts from the strongest sorcerers, invariably resulting in catastrophic collateral damage.
Did You Know?
- Only three Special Grade curses were originally recognized by the Jujutsu Higher-Ups before the Shibuya Incident: Mahito, Jogo, and Hanami.
- Ryomen Sukuna is technically classified as a Special Grade Curse, though he exists within a human vessel rather than as an independent spirit for most of the story.
- Special Grade Curses can be born from human emotions but develop personalities so complex they often view themselves as superior to their creators.
- The term 'Special Grade' is reserved exclusively for threats that no single sorcerer below that rank can hope to defeat alone.
